How to calculate cost per square foot
Three numbers are tied together: total cost, area, and price per square foot. Know any two and you can find the third.
- Price per sq ft = total cost ÷ area
- Total cost = area × price per sq ft
- Area = total cost ÷ price per sq ft
It's a fast way to sanity-check a bid, compare two quotes on the same footing, or turn a per-foot rate into a total for a client.
Cost per square foot is a starting point, not a full estimate. It hides differences in scope, materials, access, and site conditions. Use it to ballpark and compare, then build a real line-item estimate before you sign anything.
